PREPARATION NOTES

Art & antiques

Start with the object, not the label. A framed work, a ceramic object and a piece of furniture ask different questions. Describe construction, dimensions, condition and any handling concerns before a scope is agreed.

01

Describe the object

Record the materials, construction, dimensions and anything that can move or detach. Include whether measurements refer to the item itself or its current packaging.

02

Keep condition information separate

Retain the relevant condition report and photographs through the agreed business channel. An auction description is not a current transport condition record.

03

Discuss handling requirements

Mention fragile features, frames, glazing, loose components or unusual weight distribution. The preparation and handling method needs assessment for the actual object.

04

Agree the route and responsibilities

Confirm the service, packing approach, access, documented cover or liability terms and the responsibilities at each handover before proceeding.
